For qualified lawyers from other jurisdictions, the SQE 2 exemption is one of the most valuable concessions in the entire qualification framework. SQE 2 exists to prove practical legal skills — but if you have already practised law competently for years, the SRA accepts that you may be able to demonstrate those skills through your qualification and experience instead of sitting the assessment.
Eligibility rests on two limbs. First, you must hold a legal professional qualification from a jurisdiction the SRA recognises, obtained through a process that itself assessed the relevant knowledge and skills. Second, you must show that your professional experience covers the competences SQE 2 tests: client interviewing, advocacy or persuasive oral communication, case and matter analysis, legal research, drafting, and writing. The SRA assesses applications individually — there is no automatic list of exempt countries.
The application is evidence-driven, and the evidence does the persuading. A strong application typically includes your certificate of qualification and good standing, a detailed record of practice mapped explicitly against the SQE 2 competences, and corroborating material such as references from supervising partners, examples of matters handled, and confirmation of rights of practice. The mapping matters: reviewers should be able to see, competence by competence, where your experience demonstrates the skill.
Common weaknesses are generic experience letters that describe seniority rather than skills, gaps around advocacy or interviewing for lawyers whose practice was mostly transactional, and unexplained career breaks. None of these is necessarily fatal — but each needs to be addressed head-on rather than left for the assessor to wonder about.
Applications are submitted to the SRA with the applicable fee, and decisions can take several weeks. If the exemption is granted, your route to admission becomes SQE 1 plus the character and suitability assessment — a dramatically shorter and cheaper journey.
